With recent news that Spinal Tap are reuniting to help combat global warming, I thought it a little unusual that they were not even together as a band in the initial sense in the first place. Though there have been other instances of fake bands in the media (Eric Idle and Neil Innes of ‘The Rutles’ spring to mind), none seem to have as much of a following as the three fake rockers from the rock/mockumentary 'This is Spinal Tap'. With an actual backstory, numerous guest appearances in other media (their role on The Simpsons is especially memorable), and songs that actually aren't bad ("Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" features in Guitar Hero II), they could pass off as a distinctly 'real' band should they have chosen to, not being as crazy alongside the likes of other jokey bands as Tenacious D and the Eagles of Death Metal (who despite their name, do not actually play death metal). They certainly have no lack of skill on the stage or even in song writing, somewhat distorting the unusual barriers between singers and comedians (it didn’t work for Eddie Murphy, though English comedians seem to have better voices and opportunities for it).

Ahh true. Mr Burns and company. I had forgotten that, though I still can't name too many other faux groups. This will take some investigation.
A fine point of attention to detail, at the end of their song in GHII, the drummer explodes, marking up another drummer fatality. Quality stuff.
Eagles of Death Metal may have a humorous side to them but they can hardly be considered a 'jokey' or comedy band alongside the likes of Tenacious D...sounds to me like you aren't familiar with them at all but are just making that assumption because of their name.
Heh, super late in replying, but I do listen to their songs and they are a very proficient band, and they definitely do have their comic side to them. They can certainly come off as comedic and very clownish in their videos and performances for sure, likewise Tenacious D do have serious credit when it comes to being a band as well.
Surely you wouldn't think that just because their incongruous name and antics would make me believe they have no musical merit?
