Old School vs. New School

From what I gathered from the lecture this week is the situations that have evolved from the culture. What was started off from the beginning with the graffiti artists and the general living conditions they had to live in back then to the now with the positions that many a rapper or MC has wound up with.

An idea that has interested me greatly today that was mentioned was "is it better today then it was yesterday?" for the world of hip hop I have to say no. Back in the 80's the genre was growing and was free for us all to tinker with it, as the NZer pointed out it changes every 5 seconds and the environment was theirs to create, they were free to do what ever they wanted, Zoro wanted to be a voice similar to his myth counter part, it was all free expression of a voice the people felt was repressed.
Now days they have formed the culture that has been taken over by the voices that are not repressed, they aren't telling 'it' about their people and what they are going through, now we hear is all the money that they have and how they are objectifying the women (you can not tell me that 50 Cent shows any respect towards women in his songs). they are not speaking from the heart or rebelling anymore, they are simply making money.

For the individuals that are making the money it is very good for them but what about the ones that came before them and paved the way for the music, and what about those who live out the repression of their culture. In my opinion to be a great rapper in the past you put your soul on the line and say it from the heart, now the heart of rap has been ripped out and replaced with a 'white man' like machine working for the money and I see all these big names now mere shells of what they should be
