“Run Lola Run” is a quick-paced modern German film. It gives the audience strong visual and hearing impacts. The story actually is pretty simple: Lola has twenty minutes to come up with 100,000 marks and run through the city to rescue her true love. The whole movie was structured by three different versions of Lola’s run. Each version has a slight difference with different ending comes up.
The whole movie was not done in a usual way; it contains lots of different elements like fast camera angles, cartoons, close face shots, the use of panning, video games which make the movie looks like a MTV. In my opinion, the music was really important for this movie. Just like the director Tom Tykwer said, “I think, write and cut in a very musical way -- so it was obvious that I'd want to take care of the soundtrack, too…In a film, music intensifies everything.” He worked on the music with Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil and made a real pop dance record. The soundtrack fills the film with a fast paced feeling and adds to the heart-pumping adrenalin rush that element of limited time creates. From the opening sequence to the reverse credits at the end, there is rarely a moment when there is no background music. The charged soundtrack serves only to heighten the urgency and seems to make the movie go faster. In essence, this movie is an 81 minute music video.
Words cannot express the joy I have experienced while watching this lightning fast film. I just can’t help thinking of running with Lola accompanied by the rhythm.
