A statement without making one?

I find the whole punk phenomenon quite fascinating. Punk is supposedly founded on a set of oppositional ideas about power portrayed through a unique genre of music and an expressly formulated visual culture.
I find this genre puzzling because it appears to be built on such strong ideas but when it comes to analysing punk's main messages and ideas i find it difficult to find any!?!
For me it seems that punk artists are rebellious for the sake of being rebellious. To quote the Sex Pistols on their disruption of the Queens jubilee, "We declared war on England without meaning to".
This provides a clear example of the unclear statement the punk artists make. Of course it is clear that they are opposing the establishment of society and and provide affirmation of the marginal, however i it appears far more difficult to actually find this alternative way of life that they prepose as an alternative to the evil mainstream. It is for this reason that i believe the genre loses credibility. It is constructed on such ambitious ideas but never seems to get past its preoccupation with rebellion, therefore in essence never really declares much of a message at all. This dependence on keeping up appearances of disobediance and shocking the audience has in turn led to an increase in the overall commodification of the culture as it relies heavily on its visual to stay alive.
The aspects of visual culture play a huge part in the way punk is percieved. I think it is unfortunate as the central ideas that contributed to the emergence of punk are never really expressed or emphasised.
