Punk fashion more dominant than the music

I have to admit that before this week's lecture i had no idea about Punk music. Well, i knew what the style was and what the fashion was but did not realise what music was to be considered Punk. It turns out that i recognised alot of songs and bands that I really enjoy listening to. It just goes to show that Punk was more about the style than the music, even though the music had a large part to play. The lyrics to the regular Punk rock song usually consisted of some political upstanding to the rest of society but the signs and fashion was what left the impression on the world. In the documentary film Punk: Attitude I found it particularly interesting that they mention that the teenagers dressed up to what we know as Punk but the musicians themselves did not dress that way. That makes me think that even though Punk was created as a way to be factual and against consumerism instead it encouraged more consumers. Therefore, the Punk rock movement contradicted itself through their messages to teenagers. Moreover, that the consumerism of Punk was a more dominant feature than the music itself.
