Smell, has long been known as the ‘memory sense,’ of the five senses, it is known as most likely provoke reminiscence. I think that sound provokes memories just as well as smell does. Songs particularly trigger memories of television and movie moments, some happy, enjoyed moments and others we would rather forget.

How many of us can hear Celine Dion’s My Heart Will go on without remembering that wonderful moment on Titanic or have a sudden urge to watch Anchorman whenever we hear Afternoon Delight. Songs are a big part of film and television, and almost any song will remind it’s listener of a memory from the screen.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller now has the unfortunate link to Paul Holme’s Dancing with the Stars routine, which will forever be remembered by those who were lucky enough to see it. Some songs can be ruined by television, Elememop’s song Everyday’s a Saturday is now linked to KFC (an ‘great’ restaurant to put your name to). Other songs are advantaged, The Wannadie’s I’ll be there for you is recognized around the world, thanks to Friends. Songs provoke memory just as a smell woul, the question “what movie is this song from?” will continue to bug us when listening to old playlists and cds.
