from the sex pistols punk era film i got the gist that they weren't punk, punk was the name for the copycat genre, calling them punk and grouping them mainstream with the multiple punk bands, fashion, the whole era.whereas those few who started it, i believe, didnt do it to fit in or go with a trend but to shock and offend and be brutally infamous musicians. I wonder if emo is this new punk, and whoever broke it out scorns the term 'emo' and the millions of minions who follow suit. your not original.
