Music exchange between generations

The soundtrack of Almost Famous (Dir. Cameron Crowe) is a rich mosaic of all the old favorites of a generation. The film's nostalgic quality is almost undeniable. However, I see the film's soundtrack as a preservation or as a historical document that immortalizes the moments in music history and the joys of sharing music. Embedded into the film's narrative are important moments where characters understand each other once they've shared music collections. The act of sharing records is like the passing down of a custom, tradition, myth or legend. It is similar to the Maui myth or the moko in Maori culture except as we move beyond the twentieth century that cultural exchange is now a Simon and Garfunkel record.
