MTV eye candy!

People argue that MTV is too concerned with image and the notion of celebrity than it is with the actual music. However we need to consider that MTV stands both for Music AND Television, and television has largely been concerned with image since its invention. One needs to expect that the artists which are on MTV are not only required to have some form of musical talent, but also possess the looks which make viewers want to see them while they sing (or lip sync). It seems fair that MTV requires the ‘musicians’ which are showcased to possess an appealing aesthetic which will make audiences want to tune-in in the first place. After all, I’m sure artists such as Hillary Duff or Jesse McCartney would not have sold half as many albums as they did had they looked like potatoes. Seems harsh to exclude promising talent because they do not have the entire package, but the music industry needs to consider more than what is ‘heard’ by the audience.
