Encoded Playback Apparatus
In lecture Nabeel raised an important issue of encoded and gendered music apparatus. To extend on Nabeel's point I pose that other apparatus is racially encoded. Consumers might associate a specific ethnicity with a specific type of music apparatus. We as consumers might associate the record player to the young female teenager in the coming of age film but we might also attribute Chinese Asian or Japanese Asian to the mp3 player or the Ipod. I am undecided as to why this has occurred in recent popular films like Disturbia but the supporting male lead (an Asian American) can upload any ring tone to his best friend's cellphone and hack his Itunes account. Perhaps this is related to the where the technology is manufactured, it's country of origin, it seems the image of the Asian male is an easy trope to associate modern technological advances and mini, compacted technology?
