I wanted to quickly comment on the relationship between fame and Idol programmes. Perhaps, most obviously, the show is designed to produce an Idol. While it must be acknowledged that some of the first Idols in America and the United Kingdom have enjoyed successful post-idol careers, this has not been the case in New Zealand.
New Zealand’s version of Idol has yet to turn out a credible locally successful singer, let alone one who enjoys international recognition. I believe that this is because of the New Zealand public’s attitude towards Idol. New Zealanders predominantly watch Idol to criticise not to support. Many local successful Kiwi artists have also publicly expressed their disapproval of the show and of its formula.
The Judges do not come out unscathed either, they are also invariably criticised regardless of the decisions they make and furthermore are sometimes perceived as desperate celebrities who will do anything for a paycheque.
In New Zealand at least, the only person who leaves the show any more famous is Dominic Bowden. He is the only real idol of New Zealand Idol.
So why do people continue to queue up for the one millionth season? Surely they are setting themselves up for disappointment? They’re not going to be Idols. They should rename the show New Zealand Embarrassment.

Full credit must go to the band and the arrangers who are given one week to perfect the songs of ALL the performers. This is not easy.
