Ghost World

Just some things on the technology based ideas, specifically technology being somehow gendered because of its use in certain contexts. These divisions seem to be around what kind of technology is used by males and not females and vice versa. In the case of the phonograph in the reading and in Ghost World, this gendered division came out in Enid’s interest in records which seem weird in contrast to Seymour and his friends, who seem to share similar characteristics and are male. We also see the division when Enid takes Rebecca to Seymour’s party, Rebecca is uncomfortable while Enid does not seem particularly affected, more amused. In relation to the technology this shows the two sides of what is socially expected and what is not in the interests pertaining to the technology of phonograph records. In connection with that and the reading is Enid’s character and her acting out of her social boundaries as a female which eventually because of its peculiarity cut her out of Seymour’s and Rebecca’s life, with Seymour not calling her and Rebecca making new friends and going out with them leaving Enid at home.
