Fandom today is pretty big, but can we say that there is a fan base for bands of the 2000's that is as extreme and hysteric as there was in the 60's for the Beatles? Today, if you're a fan, you have all the bands songs on your iPod, usually downloaded for free, and if you really think their music is worth buying, you might just go out and actually pay the $29.95 for their CD, but let’s face it, that doesn't happen all too often these days.
The fans of the Beatles were so hysteric that I don't know how my mother and her friends still have a voice. Their constant screaming, crying and the mayhem they cause, was something of a phenomenon that we no longer see today. These fans dedicated their lives to these fans, as did those fans of Elvis. However The Beatles had a fan base of what we now call ‘tweenie’ age group. The huge success of The Beatles can be put down to their down to earth nature and the way they portrayed themselves to still be working class lads of 60s Britain who happened to make it in the music industry. Their cute faces, their immature minds with a tendancy to play games and pranks, all helped achieve their massive fan base of these young girls. These young girls are now around my mothers age, and they still get a grin on their face when they see Paul McCartney or hear a Beatles song.
We today think that we are fans of bands, yet I don’t think we really have a leg to stand on.
