PUNK IS..?

Topic: ‘Punk’

I’m almost old enough to recall Punk in it’s hey day. That is, Punk on the Auckland Music & Street Scene... after the fashion/music/genre had trickled its way across the world, all the way from London.

In lecture it was stated that Punk is “a set of ideas about power”.

This is a somewhat loose analysis, as Punk is specifically connected to socio-political climate of England under the rule of the Thatcher government during the 1980s originated under the e rule of the Thatcher government in the late 1970s.

“Margaret Thatcher led the country from 1979-1990. She is known for her conservative economic policies – such as the privatisation of state-owned industries – and the social tensions and de-regulated landscape those political reforms engendered". (See: D. Yergin & J. Stanislaw, 1998, pp. 105-113)
