Internet, undoubtedly, is the most important and popular medium for not only exhibit but also broadcast arts to the public. Youtube.com, for instance, has more than a hundred million video clips would be watched per day. Video clips could be from any kinds of art form, such as music video, TV shows, movie trailer, however, there is one kind of clips always draw public’s attention on it, that is, DIY video. But today I only want to talk about DIY music video clips on internet.
I categorise those internet musicians into to two groups, self-employed musician and ‘fun-maker’. Firstly, for those self-employed musician, most of them do not have enough funds to produce and promote their productions. Cyberspace become the best field for them to express themselves, because it’s free of charge and less regulations than television. Therefore, many kinds of musicians post their art works on the website to show people their talents, for examples, free style rap music, guitar solo, or pop songs. More, it is easier to make a clip than music video, people can use digital video camera or even webcam to film themselves. As a result of that, some musician become famous because of those videos, such as Jerry C who solo ‘Canon’ by his electronic guitar. The other group is ‘fun-maker’. Basically, they are music video remakers. They use other people’s music as background music, then act in a very funny way on the screen. In my point of view, they are not real music artists, but they become popular because they can bring funs to audience. And there is a problem has been risen by this phenomena, that is, copyrights. Because record companies do not allow people pirate their music, even on the internet. However, it is too hard to control people to freely use music.
Everyone can make their own music or video clips then post on internet, and sometimes they are even more famous singing stars or movie stars. I strongly believe that, in the near feature, those musician can make more profits from internet than singers who are from studio. But for those video remakers, they possibly need to consider about copyrights now.
