The new way to promote music-- MP3 downloading

There are always concern about mp3 downloading damage the music industry and distory the song writer's carreer and the singers fortune. However, if we use the mp3 downloading nature correctly , on the other hand it could be a new medium to promote and let people buy the good music.

- MP3 downloading promote the new music to mess audience

Whenever there is a new song release, if there is no mp3 downloading people have to wait for the album release to buy a whole album , however with MP3 downloading people can listen to the song they wanted before they buy the whole album, that will actully make more sales to the album as more people are able to listen to the new song .

- Thats the next step

As there are more people able to listen to the song online, record company can use this medium to promote their new song , new artist , putting one song for people to download at a time. It is another form of advertising. let people listen to the song and like it and they buy the album

MP3 could distory the industry but at the same time it could help the music to promote the key is how to copntrol it .

Yeah I can see where you’re coming from with MP3s having some benefits for the artists and record company like free and cheap advertising for them. But just thought I’d like to add that a friend of mine actually feeds her MP3 player memory stick with the latest hits weekly and transfers it all into her ‘laptop’. She has the latest hits, with various genres and different languages all downloaded and saved into her laptop originally from her MP3. All her downloaded music is eventually heard and burned onto cds and/or memory sticks to others’ satisfaction!!! So although others may have the opportunity to listen to the songs earlier, other technological tools such as a “laptop” could be used to deepen the negative effects of downloading damaging the music industry. As MP3 players are now considered to be the new technological product that everyone seems to have, as if it’s the new “in thing” of today sweeping over the ‘have to have’ mobile phone frenzy earlier. MP3 downloading although will cost the music industry a great loss with the increase of users budgeting and intellectually ‘downloading’ for cheaper satisfaction however can promote the new songs from artists like you mentioned.

But isn’t that a greater risk? Especially with other technological tools (laptop, computer etc) able to obtain and easily transfer downloaded music from the MP3s, this would increase the access for “burning” instead of buying the new album?

I have to agree that downloading MP3s shouldn't be looked at as purely destroying the music industry. I download music from the internet to put on my iPod, but if i do really like a few songs by the artist, i do end up going out and buying the album because there is something about hvaing the album that seems better than just having the tracks on your computer.
I was watching a NZ Music Month ad on C4 the other night, and this was their topic of discussion. Dave from Elemeno P, was revealing how a band or artist, needs populairty to make it in the industry and that there is so much more that needs to go on other than selling CD's. He says they cash in their populairty chips, not the ammount of CD's they sell.
One way of looking at this with local artists, is that the more we hear their music, whether it be on the radio or because we've downloaded it, the more we're going to support them by going to gigs etc. This is where a real musician wants their fans. So as harmful as downloading may seem, the artists have multiple other ways to make revenue and i don't think that illegal downloading is going to make a dent in their pockets anytime soon, and if it is, then they need to work on other ways to promote and sell their music.
