the voice of music

Just a little note on what Nabeel talked about in the lecture about popular music compilation score often being used as a voice for characters, lyrics and melody speaking their inner feelings. With the increase of portable personal music players it seems that we as music and music player consumers ourselves are using the music on our iPods, for example, to play a soundtrack to our lives. Playlists allow us to have our very own personalised soundtrack for when we go running, for on the bus, or any other time. Aside from technological capabilities, perhaps it is the movies we see with compilation soundtracks that cause us to believe that this is natural. Since we have already accepted our music players as extentions of ourselves (as Marshall McLuhan noted) we expect that our lives should have, and play out more interestingly with a soundtrack like that of characters on screen, which are so much part of our culture. We feel sad, happy, frustrated or whatever, so we cue up a song we love with the appropriate mood.
